Title:
Direct Manufacturing of Advanced Gas Turbine Engine Diffuser Cases
Agency / Branch:
DOD / USAF
Contract:
FA8650-05-C-5200
Award Amount:
$749,970.00
Abstract:
Methods for direct manufacturing of advanced gas turbine diffuser cases from high strength alloys such as Inconel 718 will be demonstrated using a proprietary precision metal deposition and finishing process. High Energy Beam metal deposition processing with significant reductions in product manufacturing cycle time and cost on the order of 50% and 50% respectively, are anticipated. Unique diffuser case design features are also anticipated enabling lighter weight (up to 15%) and more complex diffuser case designs relative to the baseline designs produced by investment casting. During this Phase II program emphasis will be placed on further maturation of the process from the sub-element component fabrication feasibility demonstrated in phase I by demonstrating the capability to fabricate a subdiameter (~12" dia.), full cross-sectional thickness diffuser case designed under the program. It is anticipated that successful development of the process during Phase II will mature the development to a manufacturing technology readiness level of four (4) and will be accomplished with the end goal objective of deploying the process and qualifying to produce by direct manufacturing aerospace quality components such as diffuser cases and other advanced gas turbine and structural airframe components.
