Abstract:
Very large aerial video collectors (VLAVCs) are of increasing interest, including such systems as Constant Hawk, Sonoma, Angel Fire and the planned ARGUS video sensor. These systems show significant potential in their ability to provide surveillance capabilities; however, the amount of data they generate is daunting, and image compression is required to store and transmit the data. In our Phase I effort, we showed that video compression can significantly outperform single image compression. In the Phase II effort, we propose to investigate video compression algorithms that can be implemented on the ARGUS-IS platform. These algorithms will be used to compress the data both for on-board storage and for the real-time downlink.
