Abstract:
The requirements for a low cost, low loss high power density optical interface for the transmission of laser energy through a fiber optic cable for ordnance initiation. The proposed design is an innovative non-imaging optical concentrator that concentrates the input laser beam from 2mm down to 200 um without the limitations of conventional imaging optics. The design of the concentrator will be evaluated through hand calculations and ray tracing. These ray tracings will be implemented using CAD/CAE Software. The feasibility study will include evaluation of the performance characteristics, physical size, cost and production which will lead to the final design choice. The coupler will have significant impact on any industry that transmits high powe density laser beams through optical fiber such as the military for ordnance initiation and medical energy for therapy.
