Microlaser Based Three-Dimensional Display

Three dimensional (3-D) displays that do not require glasses have many potential applications in the military. Many of today's 3-D displays resort to tricking the human visual system to perceive depth and volume. Generation of 3-D images from 2-D displays using parallax techniques requires glasses and are currently limited in the number of viewers and lack smooth, dynamic, 3-D image generation. Helical scan three dimensional displays under development have a potential to create true volumetric three dimensional images. However, theses systems are currently limited in resolution, brightness and large. Recent breakthroughs at Laser Power Corporation (LPC) have led to the development of red, green, and blue (RGB) microlaser display technology which could be coupled with the three dimensional output device technology currently under development at Specialty Devices Incorporated (SDI) to produce a revolutionary 3-D volumetric display. Both technologies have the potential to scale to high resolution, large color gamut, high brightness, and generate real time true 3-D displays in a cost competitive, compact package. The microlaser based 3-D displays will enable new opportunities for a "made in America", multiple viewer, glasses free, realistic, volumetric three dimensional display for military applications.
