Abstract:
The U.S. Navy provides urban combat training to troops, mainly Marines and Seals.. This training consists primarily of basic and close quarters battle (CQB) marksmanship and shoot/don''''t shoot skills in simulators using virtual environments using simulated weapons. Live fire CQB training exercises are typically conducted in "shoot houses." Although the live fire shoothouses are effective in instilling basic skills, the aspect of realistic training in real world, dynamic situations which require adaptive thinking and decision making is trained less effectively. In addition, the current systems are not portable nor do they integrate classroom simulation with follow-on live fire exercises. The Phase I effort established that 3D and mid-air holographic imagery using Government Off-The shelf and Commercial Off-The Shelf technology is possible. Additional research during Phase I found it is plausible to interact with the 3D and holographic imagery using live rounds in a CQB environment using a specialized 3D bullet tracking system. Phase II will incorporate this technology into a modular, live-fire shoot house for a virtual and fully immersive training experience. This effort will lead to improved training effectiveness by increasing the ability of the trainees to achieve a true "suspension of disbelief" and feel realistically immersed in their training environment.
