Abstract:
THE FEASIBILITY OF AMULTI-STAGED DIFFUSED AERATION TREATMENTSYSTEM FOR GASOLINE REMOVAL FROM CONTAMINATED HOUSEHOLD GROUND WATER SUPPLIES WILL BE STUDIED. EXPERIMENTS IN THE LABORATORY AND FIELD WILL IDENTIFY THE CONTROLLING GASOLINE COMPONENT COMPOUNDS FOR THE SYSTEM. THESE ADDITIVES ARE LIKELY TO INCLUDE METHYL TERTIARY BUTYL ETHER (MTBE) AND OTHER HIGHLY SOLUBLE AND POORLY ADSORBED COMPOUNDS. EXPERIMENTAL DATA WILL BE USED TO MODEL THE SYSTEM TO DETERMINED THE NUMBER OF STAGES AND AIR FLOW FOR A WIDE RANGE OF LOADING AND PERFORMANCE CONDITIONS. THE SYSTEMS, IF FEASIBLE, WILL PROVIDE AN ALTERNATIVE TO EXPENSIVE ACTIVATED CARBON TREATMENT AND FILL AND ANTICIPATED FUTURE NEED FOR A TREATMENT PROCESS THAT CAN REMOVE THE POORLY ADSORBED ADDITVES.
