Terrorist nerve gas attacks are a growing concern facing emergency response teams. Decontamination must be carried out rapidly and must render harmless any poisonous substances from personnel and equipment. The ability to carry out these activities on a large scale within a short period of time could significantly reduce the effect of an attack. The goal of this project is to develop an easily dispersed, effective decontaminant that causes little or no corrosion of the surface to which it is applied. During Phase I a new coating for on-site decontamination of surfaces will be developed. The method will utilize a chemically reactive matrix that can destroy a wide range of nerve, mustard and even biological agents while causing little or no corrosion of the surface to which it is applied.
Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by the awardee: Local law enforcement agencies, customs agents, fire fighter and emergency medical response personnel should also benefit from this technology.
