Abstract:

Current materials technology greatly limits the development of ultra-lightweight very large telescopes. This proposal details an innovative approach capable of yielding large structures exhibiting less than 1 kg/m2 areal density. The approach is based on high thermal conductivity thin C-C technology in conjunction with an optical quality CVR-SiC surface.
