HIGH ENERGY DENSITY COMPOSITE FLYWHEELS FOR SPACE-BASED ENERGY STORAGE SYSTEMS

A TECHNICAL RESEARCH PROGRAM DIRECTED TOWARDS THE STUDY OF HIGH ENERGY DENSITY FLYWHEELS IS PLANNED. A NEW FLYWHEEL CONCEPT THAT INCORPORATES FEATURES OF BOTH DISK AND RIM STORAGE FLYWHEELS WILL BE INVESTIGATED. THIS CONCEPT USES A NUMBER OF CONCENTRIC BUT SEPARATE COMPOSITE RINGS AS THE PRIMARY ENERGY STORAGE DEVICE. THESE RINGS ARE SANDWICHED BETWEEN TWO TAPERED COMPOSITE DISKS THAT PROVIDE THE MECHANISM FOR TRANSMITTING ENERGY FROM THE RINGS TO A SHAFT. STEADY-STATE AND DYNAMIC ANALYSES OF THE FLYWHEEL WILL BE PERFORMED TO DETERMINE THE STRAIN REQUIREMENTS FOR THE MATRIX MATERIAL USED IN THE DISKS. CANDIDATE MATERIALS THAT EXHIBIT HIGH STRAIN TO FAILURE WILL BE STUDIED EXPERIMENTALLY. BASED ON THESE RESULTS, MATERIALS WILL BE CHOSEN FOR PROTOTYPE DEVELOPMENT IN PHASE II.
