Abstract

V-22 Osprey is a dual mode aircraft with tiltrotor capabilities for transition between hover and cruise mode operation. During the transition between modes, the aerodynamics of V-22 varies continuously. Various researchers are currently utilizing the shapememory behavior of SMAs to reconfigure the shape of the blade during flight, thus maximizing aerodynamic efficiency for each flight mode. The US Navy is interested in developing and characterizing high transition temperature SMA for actuation at elevatedtemperatures. In this Phase I STTR, Materials Modification Inc proposes to develop a near-net shape fabrication methodology for high temperature SMAs with austenite transition temperatures above 100 0C. To demonstrate the feasibility, laboratory scalespecimens will be fabricated and characterized mechanically and thermally for the shape memory behavior. Defense: High temperature Shape memory alloy actuators for V-22 Osprey Other commercial applications include SMA for positioning, vibration control and compact actuation
