Novel Technique for Extraction of Algal Oil for Biodiesel
Biodiesel is an eco-friendly, alternative biofuel that can be obtained from domestic renewable resources such as vegetable oils and animal fats. In addition, certain forms of algae have recently been found to be promising sources of oil from which biodiesel can be synthesized. These algae require less area to cultivate than most dedicated crops that are currently used to produce biodiesel and can generate more oil than conventional sources. While many studies have addressed the production of biodiesel from crop sources, no optimized processes have been found for the extraction of algal oil and the synthesis of biodiesel. This project will develop a novel process for the extraction of oil from algae, the most critical step in the production of biodiesel. The approach will involve choosing a suitable solvent, which affects the efficiency by which the oil is extracted from the algae, in combination with sufficient mechanical agitation, which influences mass transport processes. Commercial Applications and other Benefits as described by the awardee: The extraction process should enable biodiesel production from algal sources. Biodiesel is a promising source of renewable energy and is slated to play a pivotal role in alternative energy technology of the future.
