Abstract

New solid polymer electrolytes (SPE's) based on Maxdem's rigid-rod polyphenylene resins are proposed for fuel cell application. The unique rigid-rod structure of the proposed ionomers is expected to lead to high proton conductivity in the absence of condensed water. The need for water management systems adds considerable weight to present fuel cells and prevents operation above about 80 degrees C. Higher operating temperatures would enhance catalyst kinetics and increase current density. Catalysts for direct oxidation of methanol require higher temperatures than available with current SPE's.
