Abstract

Magnetic resonance technology has been proven successful in detecting contaminants that affect the quality of composite fiber reinforced resin prepreg materials. The technology can measure changes in prepreg properties as well such as resin contentvariations and aging of resin. The prepregs are used in manufacturing aerospace composite structures. Exposed to high stress and fatigue these structures can fail catastrophically if there is any contaminant that constitutes non-resin, non-fibermaterials leading to loss of lives and aircrafts. The aerospace industry is pursuing automation in all aspects of manufacturing. For example, prepreg manufacturers are using intelligent machines with feedback control to manufacture composite prepregs. Aerospace structures demand the best in automation.Fiber placement process is key to manufacturing good parts automatically using advanced computer automated design tools, intelligent machinery and robotics.Designing nondestructive testing into advanced manufacturing processes is the best method to prevent part failures. Integrating the magnetic resonance system into prepreg manufacturing and fiber placement process ensures defect free parts as well assignificant reduction in cost in post-factum quality assurance procedures. The magnetic resonance system will provide real-time information on presence of contaminants, resin content and aging using automated processes thus leading to the next level inQuality.
