Abstract:
MesoScribe Technologies proposes to develop in-situ sensing technologies to interrogate material and damage states in aerospace components operating in harsh environments e.g., gas turbine engines. Sensors will be fabricated using Direct Write (DW) technology for coupon-level and component testing. Phase II will focus on demonstrating accuracy and longevity of thermocouples and strain gages. Sensor improvements will be realized through a combination of material selections and process optimization. A particularly innovative approach, initiated in the Phase I study is the use of precious metal-based thermocouples and strain gage materials to provide long-term accuracy and oxidation resistance. Sensors will be designed for embedding within turbofan components, and evaluated on standard specimens for performance e.g., sensitivity, accuracy, repeatability, across a range of temperatures. This will be followed by validation on components in simulated engine environments. Pratt & Whitney will act as a strategic partner, providing specifications for the operational environment, sensor fidelity and engine compatibility, as well as testing facilities in years 1 and 2.
