The Air Force's capability to manage decentralized forces through centralized command and control organizations is highly dependent on the ability of the theater commanders to rapidly sort, analyze, and process a tremendous amount of real-time data. The presentation of visual data to the commanders has become a primary target for information overload.Microvision proposes to build on their Virtual Retinal Display (VRD) technology to deveolop wide screen display technology for both projection and head mounted display (HMD) systems. This will provide the capability to view multiple interacting display entities within an uncluttered, high fidelity visual environment. The VRD operates by rapidly scanning an image directly onto the retina of the eye with a pinpoint focused beam of light. VRD technology offers high resolution, high image brightness and excellent color saturation, within a small, low power package. While current prototypes are applied to HMDs, development of laser projector systems is also in Microvision's plans. Microvision proposes to develop wide screen display technology through investigation of several identified tedhniques for increasing image field of view. Microvision's experience with scanning image technology and exclusive ownership of VRD technology assures successful product development and rapid commericalization of the technology.
