Full Color High Definition Head-Mounted Display for Pilot Training
Agency / Branch:
DOD / USAF
Modern avionics systems provide a tremendous amount of data to the pilot regarding navigation, instrumentation, aircraft systems and threats/opportunities. Often this data is being presented through the pilot's visual field via heads-up displays and helmet mounted displays. Modern training simulators must be capable of accurately duplicating this environment through high fidelity imagery with multiple interactive display entities. This requires cost effective HMD technology capable of very high resolution, high brightness and good color quality.Microvision, Inc. proposes to develop such a display system by increasing resolution of their Virtual Retinal Display (VRD) technology. The VRD operates by rapidly scanning an image directly onto the retina of the eye with a pinpoint focused beam of light. This technology is in the prototype stage, and has strong potential for performance increase and commercialization. Several methods have been identified to increase resolution, including optical scan line doubling, interlacing, and use of multiple light sources. Microvision proposes to investigate these techniques and develop system specifications in Phase 1, and commercialize the technology through Phase 2 and 3. Microvision's experience with scanning image technology and exclusive ownership of VRD technology assures rapid commercialization.
