Commonly known to military, FBI, and law enforcement personnel, flash-bangs are grenade-like non-lethal weapons that produce a bright flash of light combined with a loud acoustic report which is meant to momentarily startle an enemy. A single explosion using pyrotechnics contained within the device traditionally generates the flash and bang. While effective at temporarily disabling targeted personnel, they do have some drawbacks. These include the creation of smoke, presence of flame, single flash and bang report, no adjustability, and high transport costs. Mid¿ has constructed a feasible, re-usable stun grenade system design based on Phase I trade studies and technology analysis. The Innovative Piezoelectric Flash-bang (IPF) integrates a high power density electrical source, proprietary control and power conversion circuitry, augmented xenon flashlamps and deafening piezo resonators into a robust enclosure. Where conventional stun grenades relied on overpowering, one-shot events, the next generation flash-bang will exploit human weaknesses and provide a continuous and reusable diversionary tool. Furthermore, added functionality of adjustable delay, event intensity, and event duration will give the user increased confidence and control. The heightened safety and lower life cycle cost of a non-pyrotechnic device, may also open new markets such as home security and personal self-defense.
