Model-Based Study of Rollover Automotive Crashes

Migma Systems, Inc. and Professor Cynthia Bir of Wayne State University propose an innovative technology to gain a better understanding of injury mechanisms and criteria in rollover crashes. In Phase I, we propose to use our expertise in coarse-grained crash modeling and in statistical processing of the results to test the applicability of various traditional and new injury criteria in rollover crash. Real data obtained in civil (NHTSA) and military settings will be used for the criteria validation as well as to obtain the probability and severity of injuries. In addition, the distribution of injuries in real military rollover crashes will be used to measure the appropriateness of the various existent rollover tests and to design new modified physical tests. To this end, the occupant injury criteria will be calculated for each test setting and the probabilities of injuries will be subsequently estimated and compared to the empirical distributions. As a result, more advanced and validated injury criteria will be developed and more accurate injury risk assessment will be possible.
