Abstract:
This Phase II program seeks to develop laser surface texturing methodologies that, combined with solid film lubricant technology, will greatly extend the wear life of a variety of engine components used by the Joint Strike Fighter as well as diverse other military and commercial aircraft. Building on wear life enhancement results demonstrated in Phase I, this program includes tasks for refinement of the surface texturing methodology, conduct of testing to raise the Technology Readiness Level (TRL) toward a goal of 6, demonstration of the technology on one or more components identified in cooperation with a Navy prime contractor, and evaluation and summary of cost savings that will result from the process along with enumeration of any further requirements for military transition and commercialization.
