Recent initiatives such as the Knowledge Management Framework (KMF) at the 45th Space Wing (45 SW) of the AF Space Command seek to make data visible, available, and useable when needed and where needed. The KMF accomplishes these goals by federating data from multiple "silos" with an ontology model that unifies at the conceptual, business object level. While unification greatly increases user efficiency and productivity, it also comes with risks related to security. The KMF in effect creates a virtual enterprise where data is combined in new and unforeseen ways-thus providing an opportunity for unauthorized access to and/or misuse of information assets. The perceived value of the KMF to end users is directly related to the security of the information assets it integrates. Modus Operandi's proposed Wave Security Policy Harmonization, Enforcement, and Reliable Evolution (WaveSPHERE) capability will provide net-centric environments such as the KMF with a robust solution to security policy definition and enforcement in the virtual enterprise. WaveSPHERE will provide semantic-based security policy definition and enforcement at both the Community of Interest (COI) level and at the enterprise (multiple COIs exchanging information) level. The overall result will be reduced security risks when sharing information.
