Abstract

Under this Phase II effort MiTi will continue development of its high load capacity oil-free thrust bearing technology through both experiment and analysis. Phase I results showed that in the areas of load capacity per pound of bearing weight and power loss, that the compliant foil bearing has by far the highest specific load capacity, that is load per pound of bearing weight. In the areas of maximum total load capacity in excess of 500 pounds however, several unique hybrid configurations are considered the most appropriate and will be examined under Phase II.
