The U.S. Air Force desires high mach air-breathing vehicles in support of "prompt global strike"-the ability to hit any target on Earth in the shortest possible time and without relying on forward bases. In support of this goal The Air Force Research Laboratory, Propulsion Directorate is conducting research in high mach propulsion systems. These systems require high temperature thermal barrier coatings with good adhesion, erosion resistance and corrosion/oxidation protection features. MiTir has developed a highly elastic, erosion resistant coating with good thermal barrier capabilities that may be applied via low temperature application processing. Under this effort preliminary thermal conductivity and adhesion tests will be conducted to demonstrate the characteristics of the developed coating. These characteristics will be compared against state of the art coatings to show comparable or better properties. Following preliminary testing, an optimized coating regimen will be established for use in Phase II.
