Abstract

The U.S. Air Force desires high mach air-breathing ramjet/scramjet class vehicles in support of "prompt global strike". The high temperatures experienced by the propulsion system demand that advanced, low-thermal conductivity thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) be used to protect ramjet components from the hot combustion products and debris. TBCs along with internal cooling of the underlying components, offer major reductions in the surface temperatures, but are costly and often subject to spallation failures. MiTi proposes further characterization of its low thermal conductivity Korolon coating to demonstrate its superiority in adhesion, thermal conductivity and erosion resistance. Final proof testing in an Air Force ramjet test facility is also proposed.
