Abstract

Recent developments indicate that foil bearing and seal technology has great application and development potential for use in high mach turbine engines. MiTir therefore proposes to conduct and engine system performance analysis of novel VAATE engine configurations to demonstrate that when properly applied to maximum effect, that engines with integrated compliant foil bearing and seal systems will have improved performance, reliability and durability at lower weight and cost. The specific objectives of this program are to 1) prepare an engine model for cycle analysis; 2) conduct cycle analysis tradeoff studies demonstrating the benefits of foil bearings and seals; 3) establish the foil bearing and seal requirements specifications from the VAATE engine designs evaluated; and 4) Identify candidate test engine and facilities for Phase II demonstration.
