A low cost, miniature, low power device is needed to identify the time and location of any tampering with storage containers, vehicles, and military systems. This project addresses this need by integrating two proven technologies: a miniaturized Global Positioning System location sensor and a miniaturized tag integrated circuit. The tag integrated circuit includes a direct sequence spread spectrum microwave frequency radio, a microcontroller, and low power static random access memory integrated onto a single chip. The combination of the two technologies provides a low cost, low power, highly miniaturized tracking device that can be activated to record the time and position of any tampering with critical shipments. Phase I will integrate and test the system to demonstrate technological feasibility. In Phase II, a miniaturized, low power sensor will be built and tested in a 2"x2" assembly.
Anticipated Results/Potential Commercial Applications as described by the awardee: The miniaturized sensor should have commercial applications in asset management security and surveillance.
