Title:
NanoBiocides for Wood-Based Construction Materials
Agency:
USDA
Contract:
N/A
Award Amount:
$349,902.00
Abstract:
The U.S. forest products industry had sales of $262B in 1997, of which two thirds was used for building construction. The use of wood for home construction is an effective, efficient, environmentally friendly, renewable construction material. A key issue in using wood materials in construction is their susceptibility to mold, fungi, and termite infestation resulting in over $10B combined damage per year as well as heightened health concerns. Phase II work will position and bring the development of NanoCide type materials to the point of being able to scale up to economically feasible ton-sized quantities and to be able to provide on a commercial scale a very effective biocide product that could greatly benefit a wide cross section of U.S. wood product and building material manufacturers.
