Abstract:
Military parachuting operations require complex planning with the integration of a wide range of data. In essence what is needed is a device that can incorporate GPS data, map data and meteorological data along with parachute/free fall performance specifications to provide the user with an immediate update of possible (reachable) DZ's under current conditions. To this end Nanohmics has teamed with EADS Deutschland GmbH, MicroOptical and Inter-4 to develop a parachutist tactical guidance system based on the Inter-4 PDA system, coupled with the EADS Parafinder tactical guidance software and the MicroOptical wireless head mounted display. This combination promises to deliver a system that incorporates the optimum capabilities in both hardware and software. All of these efforts will be coordinated by Nanohmics integration personnel. This teaming arrangement effectively leverages the full capabilities of each company to focus on a specific part of the system. By segmenting this development into PDA, software and display components, changes in a single component are easier to manage and will have less of an effect on the other components and the overall program timeline. This should allow a relatively smoother transition of the system to more advanced hardware and software as they become available.
