65874 Replacing air with oxygen in industrial applications improves the efficiency of oxidation reactions and reduces polluting emissions, including NOx. Therefore, the demand for inexpensive, high purity oxygen is steadily rising. This project will develop ceria-based membrane materials for small-scale, ceramic-based oxygen generation systems that reduce cost and improve technical viability by operating at lower temperatures. Phase I will incorporate new ceria-based membranes in a dense ceria film on a porous electrode support. The electrochemical performance of these membrane structures will be evaluated by electrical testing, and the feasibility of operating a ceramic oxygen generation system at low temperature will be demonstrated. Commercial Applications And Other Benefits as described by awardee: Commercial applications include metal fabrication operations, home-medical and hospital oxygen supplies, life support in civilian and military aircraft, small-scale industrial applications, fermentation, and pulp and paper operations.
