Sulfur-Tolerant Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) Anodes

In this SBIR Phase I proposal (Topic OSD06-EP1), NexTech Materials, Ltd. will comparatively test anode materials sets for SOFCs for operation on sulfur-containing (200 ppmv H2S) fuels between 700-850,aC. Cell performance and stability will be characterized in both sulfur-containing hydrogen and simulated reformate fuels to provide a better scientific and engineering understanding of the benefits and limitations of the candidate materials sets. Parallel powder and catalyst characterization of the materials will provide a basis for the broader interpretation of the materials performance and operative mechanisms. Based on the optimization of materials performance and comparative testing, the composition(s) exhibiting the best performance will be selected for further development and commercialization in Phase II, providing the Air Force, other branches of the military and the commercial sector, a rapid demonstration of these sulfur-tolerant anode compositions and a commercial source for their acquisition.
