Abstract

65066 This project will develop a low energy neutron detector based upon capture and conversion with a boron-enriched microfiber electron multiplier. The detector will be suitable for large and shaped formats and will achieve high detection efficiency, low gamma response, and good resolution. Phase I will demonstrate the functionality of the concept prior to Phase II scale-up to a large (25-40 cm) shaped detector, accompanied by suitable electronic readout. In particular, Phase I will melt and draw boron-based glass into 20-50 micron diameter fibers. The microfibers will be bonded into a large format electron multiplier. Evaluation of the prototypes will first be made with electrons and subsequently tested for imaging low energy neutrons. Commercial Applications And Other Benefits as described by awardee: Applications include neutron radiography, neutron diffraction and scattering, non-destructive evaluation (NDE), nuclear materials inspection, nuclear reactor monitoring, and materials characterization for corrosion and defects.
