Abstract:
VAST AREAS OF THE WESTERN AND SOUTHWESTERN U.S. CONSIST OF ARID AND SEMI-ARID LANDS THAT ARE CURRENTLY UNDERUTILIZED. A PHYTOCHEMICAL SURVEY OF OVER 800 PLANT SPECIES NATIVE TO THESE REGIONS INDICATES THAT ATRIPLEX CANESCENS, A SUCCESSFUL RANGELAND SHRUB, IS A POTENTIALLY USEFUL SOURCE OF TRITERPENOID SAPONINS, A GROUP OF NATURALLY-OCCURRING SURFACTANTS WITH INDUSTRIAL UTILITY. HOWEVER, FURTHER WORK IS NEEDED IN TERMS OF EXTRACTION AND INSOLATION TECHNOLOGY AND PROCESS DESIGN, STRUCTURE ELUCIDATION OF THE COMPOUNDS, ND CHARACTERIZATION OF THEIR PHYSICOCHEMICAL PROPERTIES IN TERMS OF SURFACTANT PROPERTIES (DETERGENCY), HEAT STABILITY,WATER DISPERSIBILITY, AND BIODEGRADABILITY. THE PROPOSED PHASE I RESEARCH WILL RESOLVE THESE QUESTIONS AND FORM THE BASIS FOR THE COMMERCIAL EXPLOITATION OF THIS CURRENTLY UNDERUTILIZED BIORENEWABLE CHEMCIAL RESOURCE.
