Novel Spectacle Mounted Reading Telescope for Low Vision

Improved reading and other near-range visual tasks are among the primary goals of most visuallyimpaired persons. Existing low vision optical aids serve these demands poorly due either to their veryproximate working distance (microscopes), or narrow field of view (telemicroscopes). In addition,current near optical aids can only be used at a fixed working distance. We will develop a novel binocularyoked-focus low vision reading telescope (BRT) specifically designed to maximize optical performanceat a "normal" near working distance. The device would be capable of focusing for different distances,would be light in weight, comfortable to wear, offer a wide field of view, and be acceptable inappearance. This concept is derived from our earlier, successful work with the horizontal light pathoptical design of the Vision Enhancing System (VES)TM. Phase I efforts will center upon the developmentof the optical design, yoked focusing mechanism, and mechanical design. A small number of initialprototypes will be constructed for preliminary technical and clinical evaluation prior to Phase IIrefinement and full clinical testing.
