Trahan, Business Official DOE Grant No. DE-FG02-97ER82446 Amount: $75,000 A high frequency power source is required to obtain high accelerating gradients in a future electron-positron high energy physics accelerator. The requirement is for a source operating at 34 billion cycles per second in the energy range of 5 trillion electron volts (TeV). No sources are currently available to drive multi-TeV energy linear colliders. This project is to develop such a source, referred to as a third barmonic magnicon. Magnicon amplifiers with efficiencies in excess of 70% have been operated at low power and frequency, and it is expected that further improvements in the circuit design can give the required specifications. Simulation studies will be performed in Phase I to design a third harmonic magnicon amplifier for generating radio frequency power at the desired frequency, power and efficiency. The final engineering, construction and testing of the amplifier are to be carried out under Phase II in collaboration with the Naval Research Laboratory. Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by the awardee: These new sources would make it possible to construct multi-TeV linear colliders with reasonable operating cost. These high power and high efficiency sources could also be applied to drive compact industrial linear accelerators used for medical applications and as injectors into synchrotron radiation sources required for high technology applications, e.g., production of computer chips._
