A Microwave Active Bragg Compressor
This project will design a novel prototype microwave pulse compressor for linear collider applications. The Active Bragg Compressor (ABC) differs from other approaches in the use of an electrically controlled Bragg reflector to accumulate the microwave power in the compressor and subsequently switch the compressed microwave pulse to the load. This project will determine optimum parameters for the Bragg reflectors, effects of a plasma switch on the Bragg reflector, and dimensions of storage waveguide. In order to maximize the efficiency of the compressor, plans for design, construction, and testing of a prototype microwave compressor utilizing electrically controlled Bragg reflectors will also be developed. A prototype will be built in Phase II.
Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by the awardee: In addition to providing an alternative method of pulse compression for linear electron/positron colliders the Active Bragg Compressor should open up commercial markets for relatively simple, low-cost, powerful microwave sources for laboratory, industrial and other applications.
