Abstract

This proposal is to complete the detailed design and construct aprototype of theWeighted Oceanographic Registration Mine (WORM). The Mine isdesigned to beautonomously deployed for periods of up to 90 days. During thattime, it willinstrument and record data on acoustic energy, seismic events, burial of the mine, water flow in the vicinity of the mine, water pressure, attitude, orientation, and various engineering parameters. To this end, two specializedsensors willbe built and tested: a short range high spatial resolutionAcoustic DopplerCurrent Profiler and an acoustic Burial Sensor. Specializedtransducers will beutilized in both of these and in the acoustic energy sensor. Aspecialnon-ferrous mine casing will be constructed. Most othercomponents will becommercial off-the-shelf. The power source will be alkalineprimary cells.Data storage will utilize IDE hard drives. In order to make themost efficientuse of the available energy supply, a multi-processorarchitecture will beemployed. All required embedded systems software as well topsidecontrolsoftware and appropriate mission planning software utilizingappropriatelanguages will be provided.
