Abstract:
Optomec proposes to develop the capability to use the laser deposition process to provide an alternative for investment casting of advanced diffuser cases. Previous data suggests that laser deposition can be a viable manufacturing route for these components. We will develop the process parameters to deposit features of the diffuser case, and will demonstrate the ability of laser deposition to make the diffuser case with the required shape, properties and economics. Advanced features of Optomec's laser deposition process, including multi-axis deposition and closed-loop control, will be used to optimize geometry and microstructure. A cost model will be developed, and manufacturing plans established, such that a business case can be made to proceed to Phase II. The outcome will be an assessment of the process relative to casting, and an identification of methods to successfully develop and introduce the technology to the Air Force.Small Business Information at Submission:OPTOMEC DESIGN CO.
