Very-high-resolution, Large-field-of-view, Wireless, Color Helmet-mounted Desplay

This proposal describes a novel technique to fabricate small-size high-resolution active matrix displays and to integrate them into wide angle helmet-mounted-displays. Conventional thin-film transistors fabricated with amorphous and polysilicon technologies are not capable of supporting such high resolution due to their low carrier mobility. We propose to replace such low performance amorphous or polysilicon transistors with single crystal transistors on a transparent substrate using a new approach. Or approach is well suited for mass production and will out-perform the other single crystal approaches in terms of yield-reliability and cost. A multiple-displays-per-eye approach will be taken to achieve the desired wide field of view. Wireless communication choices will be examined to select the most power efficient, compact system for the Phase Ii prototype. LEEP systems which built NASA's first prototype helmet mounted display will be a subcontractor on the project.
