Abstract:
PSR proposes exploratory development research aimed at devising methods which employ binary optics to improve the performance and cost effectiveness of airborne electro-optical sensors, including missile seekers, reconnaissance cameras (visible, mid and far infrared) and guided bomb laser sensors. Significant reduction in sensor weight, size and cost are anticipated. Specific examples of reduced parts count, improved thermal and chromatic optical performance are presented as evidence of the potential of binary optics in similar applications. Examples of practical, producible binary optical elements demonstrate the producibility of these novel designs. PSR proposes teaming with Teledyne Brown Engineering, Huntsville, AL, for theoretical design assistance for Phse I option and the production of prototypes in Phase II.
