Abstract

Presently NAWC-AD is seeking a Full Authority Digital Engine Controller (FADEC) to optimize the performance of a high speed spark assisted diesel engine. The specific goal of PDI's Phase I effort is to identify and demonstrate an injection and ignition control strategy which optimizes engine performance in the presence of varying ambient conditions, engine variation and disturbances, and uncertain engine control data. Candidate control techniques include PID, LQG/LTR, H infinity, sliding mode control, and extremum adaptive control. To provide a truly complete FADEC, supporting engine operation functions will also be investigated: start/stop control, warm up control, and instrumentation fault detection, isolation, and accommodation. The real time demonstration includes evaluation of the developed concepts as well as a potential FADEC embedded platform. The project is to be accomplished in seven tasks: Requirements Identification, Model Design, Control Strategy and Design, Software Engineering, Real Time Demonstration, and Final Report.
