Abstract:
We propose to develop, test, and deliver a portable time domain terahertz (TD-THz) radome inspection system. This system will utilize the TD-THz detection methods, which were demonstrated in Phase I to identify water intrusion and delamination in radome panel composite structures. The system will be sufficiently easy to handle by radome climbers. By detecting and mapping defects in these advance composite structures we expect to provide a tool to gauge the current state of performance of the structure. This will allow emergent maintenance needs to be addressed. The system will consist of two main components: 1) a man portable TD-THz control unit (based on proven fiber optic coupled TD-THz technology) which will remain at the radome zenith access hatch, in a lift, or on the ground; and 2) a lightweight hand-held multi-channel TD- THz reflection imager and display connected to the control unit by a light weight fiber optic umbilical. The operator will scan the radome panel by "swiping" the unit across a stripe area on the outside (or inside) surface of the radome. The radome's laminar structure, highlighting water intrusion and delaminations, will be shown on a display.
