Abstract:
The key to higher efficiencies and lower emissions in next generation power plants, such as Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) systems, is an increase in the firing temperatures that are now limited by the turbines materials. In this project, higher-temperature thermal protection systems, based on technology developed for the protection of rocket nozzles for launch and satellite systems, will be demonstrated for current turbine materials. The new thermal protection system will feature a 2000oC oxygen barrier and a stable, thermally-grown oxide bond coating. The new thermal protection system will enable turbine inlet temperatures to be raised to 1500oC. Commercial Applications and other Benefits as described by the awardee: The technology should speed the introduction of IGCC power plants, enabling our abundant coal resources to fuel power plants, thereby reducing our dependence on foreign imported oil and significantly lowering emissions. Other commercial applications include diesel engines, jet engines, rocket engines, and high performance automotives.
