Erosion Resistant Plasma Spray Coatings for HTPMC Applications

This Small Business Innovation Research Phase II objective is to develop erosion resistant coatings on High Temperature Polymer Matrix Composites (HTPMC). HTPMC's have tremendous potential to reduce the weight and cost of military aircraft turbine engines if their durability in service environments can be demonstrated. The Phase II work will include a continuation of the development initiated in Phase I through optimization of the coating process for a better bond coat as well as development of a topcoat of nanocrystalline tungsten carbide based erosion resistant coatings. For a complete study, the optimized coatings will be evaluated for the erosion resistance against runway sand and environmental protection against humidity, corrosion, and fatigue.
