Abstract

The innovative, physics-based, radar scattering models and simulations that were developed and validated in our Phase I research effort are capable of reproducing the polarimetric reflectivity of a number of important terrain types. While theproof-of-concept work has successfully demonstrated the flexibility and accuracy of our methodology in synthesizing the bistatic scattering coefficient of terrain, it represents only a relatively small picture of the capabilities of this simulationtechnology. The work plan we discuss in this proposal would seek to: (1) greatly expand and improve the bistatic terrain simulation capability of our source code base; (2) provide continuing validation for new models and methodologies as they are developed; (3)carefully analyze the sensitivity to key ground-truth parameters of all the scattering models; and (4) incorporate the entire suite of tested and validated terrain models with DTED and land cover databases in an easy-to-use, GUI-based tool for analyzingthe bistatic radar signature of a wide variety of terrain types at user-selected locations on the earth?s surface.
