Abstract

A RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT PROJECT IS PROPOSED TO DEVELOP MATERIALS FOR PACKAGING LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAYS (LCDS) USINGPLASTIC SUBSTRATES. THE PLASTIC LCD TECHNOLOGY WILL MEET THE DOD'S NEED OF DISPLAYS RANGING FROM HAND HELD TO BLACKBOARD SIZE. THE KEY TECHNOLOGY IS SELECTION OF PLASTIC SUBSTRATES AND DEVELOPMENT OF A LOW TEMPERATURE DEPOSITION METHOD FOR A TRANSPARENT CONDUCTIVE THIN FILM ON THE PLASTIC SUBSTRATES. THE SUCCESS OF DEVELOPMENT OF THIS TECHNOLOGY WILL ALLOW THE FABRICATION OF A PLASTIC LCD WITH HIGH IMPACT RESISTANCE, ENHANCED VIEWING CHARACTERISTICS, REDUCED WEIGHT, AND HIGH RELIABILITY. CHEMISTRY AND MATERIAL RESEARCH SHALL FOCUS ON SURFACE ACTIVE AGENTS, TOPCOATS, AND SURFACE TREATMENT TO PROMOTE ADHESION AT THE INTERFACE OF TRANSPARENT CONDUCTIVE FILM AND THE PLASTIC SUBSTRATES.
