Abstract

THE THIRTEEN MILLION TWO AND FOUR STROKE GASOLINE UTILITY ENGINES SOLD IN THE U.S EACH YEAR ARE A MAJOR SOURCH OF TOTAL U.S. AIR EMISSIONS. THE CALIFORNIA AIR RESOURCES BOARD ESTIMATES THAT THESE RICH-BURNING UTILITY ENGINES CONTRIBUTE FIVE PERCENT OF THE TOTAL STATEWIDE MOBILE SOURCES HYDROCARBONS AND FOUR PERCENT OF TOTAL STATEWIDE MOBILE SOURCES CARBON MONOXIDE. SIMILAR LEVELS MAY BE EXPECTED NATIONWIDE. PRECISION COMBUSTION, INC. PROPOSES AN INNOVATIVE VERY HIGH EFFICIENCY APPROACH TO EXHAUST CLEAN-UP WHICH, INCORPORATED INTO A TWO OR FOUR STROKE UTILITY ENGINE, WILL INEXPENSIVELY DESTROY MOST OF THESE EMISSIONS. SUCH A TECHNOLOGY WOULD PROVIDE AN INEXPENSIVE MEANS TO ACHIEVE A MAJOR IMPROVEMENT IN AIR QUALITY. PHASE I WILL BUILD CATALYTIC SYSTEMS FOR TEST ON A SUITABLE FOUR STROKE ENGINE AND A SUITABLE TWO STROKE. HC, CO AND NOX WILL BE MEASURED, AS WELL AS SYSTEM PERFORMANCE FACTORS SUCH AS VARIOUS TEMPERATURES AND NOISE. IN PHASE II, A MANUFACTURABLE PROTOTYPE WILL BE DEVELOPED.
