Precision Combustion, Inc. (PCI), utilizing coated metallic mesh substrate technology (patented and trademarked by PCI as Microlithr) has demonstrated operation of compact, modular reactors for converting liquid and gaseous hydrocarbon fuels into a mixture of CO and H2 at exceptionally high power densities. During this Phase I, the ATR operating window was mapped out for JP-8 and Diesel fuels. The size of the 5-kWt catalytic ATR reactor was 3in3 (50cc). It demonstrated efficient reforming, lightoff in less than 1 minute in dry mode, and complete fuel conversion in wet mode with moderate steam requirement (S/C = 1 to 2). The reactor was shown to be sulfur tolerant and coke resistant for the duration of operation. During Phase II, PCI is proposing to develop and demonstrate an integrated standalone prototype micro-reforming system operating on regular JP-8 fuel and producing sulfur free reformate suitable for directly feeding a 0.2 - 2-kWe SOFC stack. Issues associated with the ATR reactor integration with heat exchange, sulfur removal, balance of plant and system control components will be addressed. A prototype micro-reformer will be assembled, tested and delivered to ARL for further testing and integration with a SOFC stack and is expected to meet multi agency needs.
