Abstract:
The proposal is to develop a high frame rate imaging system for combustion and other research, by combining a solid state camera capable of capturing images of transient photometric phenomena at framing rates up to 1,000,000 frames per second with the laser sheet illumination technology that has been developed by the Propulsion Directorate of Phillips Laboratory. Both instrumental technologies are advances in the state of the art and in combination provide a much needed instrumentation capability for study of high speed and transient phenomena. There is considerable commercial market for high speed imaging instrumentation. Phase I will include experiments with the MHz framing digital camera and laser sheet illumination facility to better identify the optimum configuration of an instrument system. Combining these technologies will maximize their commercial applications and market.
