This Small Business Innovation Research Phase I project will develop a novel laser assisted cryogenic jet cleaning process. Current laser based processes can result in subsurface damage. Our proposed process will integrate a high-pressure cryogenic jet of liquid nitrogen into the laser cleaning process. The objective of the research is to demonstrate the synergistic effects of the laser/cryojet process to commercial applications including not only cleaning for weld preparation, but also possibly machining of exotic materials such as semiconductors or glassy materials, as well as for coatings removal. In Phase I, we propose to demonstrate several key physical principles that will justify the development of a prototype system in Phase II. This research may have broad applications in the areas of advanced materials research, development and processing beyond our identified specific target applications.
