Abstract:

New telemetry modulation techniques such as SOQPSK and Multi-h CPM double and triple, respectively, the spectral efficiency of conventional PCM/FM. Transmitters which employ these techniques, however, are currently limited to relatively narrow RF tuningranges. The proposed research addresses this limitation by investigating techniques which will allow a single compact design to transmit multiple modulation techniques, at arbitrary bit rates, over the entire telemetry band of 1.4 to 2.4 GHz. Theresearch proposed here will lead to ways of implementing telemetry transmitters which can be reconfigured - in the aircraft - to operate with new modulation techniques, and tune over any of the channels authorized for aeronautical telemetry. This enormousincrease in operational flexibility will greatly ameliorate the difficulties in scheduling aircraft test flights due to lack of available spectrum.
