Abstract:

THIS PROJECT INVOLVES USING A COMPUTER SYSTEM TO AID READING-DISABLED CHILDREN, ALLOWING THEM TO READ MATERIAL WRITTEN ABOVE THEIR READING LEVEL. THE SYSTEM WILL BE TESTED WITHIN THE SCHOOL SETTING. THIS SYSTEM, COMPUTER AIDED READING, MAKES IT POSSIBLE FOR CHILDREN, AS THEY READ,TO QUICKLY IDENTIFY WORDS THAT THEY ARE UNABLE TO IDENTIFY ON THEIR OWN. PILOT STUDIES HAVE SHOWN THAT WITH THIS ASSISTANCE, CHILDREN CAN READ, WITHOUT FRUSTRATION, PASSAGESTHAT ARE SUBSTANTIALLY ABOVE THEIR INDEPENDENT READING LEVEL. ENHANCEMENTS WILL BE MADE TO THE SYSTEM AND TWO STUDIES WILL BE CONDUCTED TO DETERMINE WHAT LEVEL OF TEXT CAN BE ADEQUATELY READ WITH THIS ASSISTANCE. IN A THIRD STUDY, JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS WHO READ POORLY WILL RECEIVE COMPUTER ASSISTANCE IN READING THEIR SOCIAL STUDIES MATERIALS, TO LEARN WHETHER THIS MAKES IT POSSIBLE FOR THEM TO READ THEIR ASSIGNMENTS WITHOUT ADDITIONAL HELP, AND TO THEN PARTICIPATE FULLY IN NORMAL CLASSES, IN SPITE OF THEIR READING DISABILITY. THE SYSTEM IS EXPECTED TO HAVE WIDE APPLICABILITY IN ASSISTING READING-DISABLED CHILDREN TO DEALWITH THE READING REQUIREMENTS OF SCHOOLING WITHOUT DISCOURAGEMENT AND FRUSTRATION.
